Design and Implementation of a Learning Analytics Toolkit for Teachers Posted: 11 Apr 2013 09:24 AM PDT Learning Analytics can provide powerful tools for teachers in order to support them in the iterative process of improving the effectiveness of their courses and to collaterally enhance their students' performance. In this paper, we present the theoretical background, design, implementation, and evaluation details of eLAT, a Learning Analytics Toolkit, which enables teachers to explore and correlate learning object usage, user properties, user behavior, as well as assessment results based on graphical indicators. The primary aim of the development of eLAT is to process large data sets in microseconds with regard to individual data analysis interests of teachers and data privacy issues, in order to help them to self-reflect on their technology-enhanced teaching and learning scenarios and to identify opportunities for interventions and improvements |
Implications for Learning Analytics Tools: A Meta-Analysis of Applied Research Questions Posted: 11 Apr 2013 09:20 AM PDT Abstract: Educators are in need for powerful Learning Analytics tools in order to improve the effectiveness of their courses and to enhance the performance of their students. In order to design such tools, knowledge about teachers‟ interests and research activities is required. In this paper, we present the results of a meta-analysis of case studies described in the conference proceedings of the approved German eLearning conference "Deutsche eLearning Fachtagung Informatik" (DeLFI). By answering the following two questions: „What research questions are teachers asking for improving Technology-Enhanced Learning?‟ and „Which methods do teachers apply to answer their research questions?‟, our aim is to help TEL researchers generate indicators which can be used as a basis for Learning Analytics tools. Enhancing Education: The 5 E's Posted: 11 Apr 2013 09:16 AM PDT The 5 E's is an instructional model based on the constructivist approach to learning, which says that learners build or construct new ideas on top of their old ideas. The 5 E's can be used with students of all ages, including adults. Each of the 5 E's describes a phase of learning, and each phase begins with the letter "E": Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. The 5 E's allows students and teachers to experience common activities, to use and build on prior knowledge and experience, to construct meaning, and to continually assess their understanding of a concept. |
Enhancing Education: Making Media Accessible Posted: 11 Apr 2013 09:10 AM PDT While new technologies promise to expand learning and entertainment opportunities, they can also present significant obstacles to people with disabilities. Traditional broadcast and cable television, as well as movies in theaters, offer closed captions and audio descriptions to make program material available to viewers who are hearing- or visually impaired. Newer technologies, however, such as the Internet, Web, DVD, and DTV, may not include accessibility features, thus denying access by users with disabilities. |

GradeCraft - a gameful course assessment system Posted: 11 Apr 2013 07:51 AM PDT Our intent is to create a tool that makes it easy for anyone to create a gameful course assessment system. We're piloting a new and more generalizable version of GradeCraft during the fall semester of 2012, and our hope is that we can make it available for anyone to use by January 2013. |
Posted: 11 Apr 2013 07:12 AM PDT We started Understoodit in May 2012, with the goals of making classrooms more interactive and giving students an opportunity to voice their confusion anonymously. Over the summer of 2012, Understoodit.com was tested in over 200 classes, workshops, lectures and presentations. Based on feedback from those early adopters we were able to refine Understoodit by adding more features and keeping it simple to use. During the testing period a further 3000 educators signed-up to use Understoodit.com. |
Posted: 11 Apr 2013 06:57 AM PDT Reflecting about captured feedback data may help users to improve their skills and performance when addressing an audience. Besides, such data will help her to reflect about the differences between her own perspective on an event and how it is perceived by the participants. For situations where a person is addressing a big or virtually distributed audience there is currently little or no support to learn by reflection for both the presenter and the audience. For instance, in the academic context, one of the main daily activities for professors, lecturers and students are lectures and conferences. However, for the lecturers it's not easy to know how their performance is perceived by the audience (e.g. is it difficult or easy to follow? Is it too fast or too slow?). Especially in big or virtual courses or conferences, feedback from the audience is missing that helps the speaker to quickly evaluate the overall development and react accordingly. But how to present individual feedback of a large group of participants so condensed that the lecturer can decipher it en passant without losing and deferring too much attention to the system? |
